They read fewer sources, more deeply. The failure mode of UPSC preparation is drowning in sources. One newspaper. One magazine. Standard textbooks. That is it.

Answer writing is the product. Everything else is raw material. You cannot improve at something you do not practise. Reading without writing is like watching cooking videos without cooking.
